In the book Cinema Au Naturel, Mark Storey states: two related terms that we will continually run across are nudist and naturist. Although the meanings of the two terms are virtually identical, they often have different connotations for those who prefer one to the other. In America, people who believe that it is physically, socially, emotionally, and perhaps spiritually healthy to go about fully nude individually and in groups of mixed gender, wherever the weather permits and others are not offended, generally refer to themselves as nudists. In Europe, such people more often than not, refer to themselves as naturists. Several activists, such as Vincent Bethellclaim that associations to promote naturism or nudism are unnecessary, leading only to nudity in tolerated ghettos.

The night was quiet, the air was warm—the sky was lit with thousands of stars. We were entirely abandoned, lying on the sand, when abruptly we decided to go for a midnight swim. We didn't try en route for hide anything, or steal glances by one another's bodies. We simply enjoyed the moment, peeling off our attire before jumping into the water below the moonlight.

All the rage public pools, children of all ages were allowed to run around bare all the time. Even now I'm comfortable with getting naked in the sauna or gym changing room. Perhaps it's because I'm German. Nudism is traditionally popular in Germany, a countryside considered buttoned up and conservative compared with, let's say, Italy.
